Salem Township, PA – School Van Driver Killed in Crash on Route 22

Salem Township, PA (March 9, 2025) – A tragic crash in Westmoreland County claimed the life of a school van driver after a tractor-trailer ran a red light on Friday morning, March 7.

According to police, the accident occurred just after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Route 22 and Route 819. The tractor-trailer driver reportedly did not see the red light due to sun glare and proceeded through the intersection, striking a school van and another vehicle.

The van’s driver, 60-year-old Rene Davis of Greensburg, suffered fatal injuries. Authorities confirmed that no children were in the van at the time of the crash. The other vehicle, driven by a 17-year-old Greensburg Salem student, was also impacted. The student was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and traffic was disrupted as authorities worked to investigate and clear the wreckage. Officials continue to look into the details of the crash.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Rene Davis. We also hope for a full recovery for the injured student.

Truck Accidents in Pennsylvania

Salem Township, PA – School Van Driver Killed in Crash on Route 22Pennsylvania roads see thousands of accidents involving large commercial trucks each year. Due to their size and weight, these vehicles can cause severe or fatal injuries when involved in collisions, especially at intersections. Recent reports indicate that over 7,000 truck-related crashes occur in Pennsylvania annually, with many leading to tragic outcomes.

Understanding why truck accidents happen can help drivers stay aware of potential risks. Some common causes include:

  • Red-Light Violations – Large trucks take longer to stop than smaller vehicles, and running a red light, whether due to distraction or sun glare, can result in deadly crashes.
  • Driver Fatigue – Truck drivers often work long hours, and fatigue can lead to slower reaction times and poor judgment behind the wheel.
  • Blind Spots – Large trucks have significant blind spots, making it harder for drivers to see smaller vehicles when changing lanes or turning.
  • Weather and Visibility Issues – Sun glare, fog, and heavy rain can make it difficult for drivers to see traffic signals or other vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Improperly Loaded Cargo – Shifting or unbalanced cargo can cause a truck to lose control, particularly when navigating intersections or sharp turns.
