Philadelphia, PA (August 18, 2024) – A three-car collision on Thursday afternoon, August 15, resulted in one fatality and six injuries, causing Kelly Dr to be closed for several hours. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Kelly Dr and Reservoir Dr.
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the accident happened when a black Nissan Altima, driven by a 44-year-old man, attempted an illegal left turn to avoid traffic. This maneuver led to a collision with another car.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where they transported a 41-year-old man to Temple Hospital, where he was later declared deceased. The Altima driver was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries.
Firefighters were on the scene to assist in extracting the vehicles, while police managed traffic and investigated the crash. Five additional individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The Crash Investigation Division is currently reviewing the details, and charges are pending.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim. We also hope those injured in this crash make a swift recovery.
Rising Traffic Fatalities in Philadelphia
The alarming increase in fatal car accidents in Philadelphia is raising serious concerns for both the community and law enforcement. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported 87 traffic-related fatalities in 2023, a troubling 12% rise from the previous year. This increase highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and more stringent enforcement of traffic regulations.
Intersection collisions, such as the recent crash at Kelly Dr and Reservoir Dr, are a major factor in these fatalities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that such crashes accounted for nearly 40% of all traffic deaths in Philadelphia last year. This data underscores the critical importance of following traffic signals and laws to prevent these catastrophic accidents.
When a fatal accident results from negligence or misconduct, the surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim. This legal action allows families to seek compensation for losses stemming from the accident, which may include medical expenses, funeral costs, and lost wages.
Typically, immediate family members—spouses, children, or parents—are eligible to file these claims. Consulting with an experienced lawyer is essential to navigating the specifics of filing a wrongful death lawsuit and securing justice for the deceased.
Seeking legal guidance is essential for victims and their families to navigate the complex legal process and pursue rightful compensation.
