Mifflin Co, PA (August 22, 2024) – A pedestrian crash occurred on Wednesday night in Granville Township, Mifflin County, where a fire police officer was struck by a car while responding to a fire scene. The accident took place shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Route 522 South, which had been blocked off to facilitate emergency vehicle movement from Peace Dr.
According to the Junction Fire Company, fire crews were dispatched to a residence on Peace Dr. just before 10:00 p.m. following reports of an odor of smoke in the structure. As firefighters were clearing the scene and Route 522 South was being managed for the safe exit of emergency vehicles, the fire police officer was struck by a passing car. The officer received immediate medical attention from on-site firefighters and paramedics from Fame EMS. Subsequently, they were transported by helicopter to a nearby trauma center for further treatment. The severity of the injuries has not been disclosed, but the incident has led to significant concern within the firefighting community. Granville Township Police are currently investigating the accident. Route 522 was closed from Loop Rd to Walmart until approximately 12:30 a.m. to allow for the investigation and accident cleanup.
This incident marks the second recent occurrence in the region where a fire police officer has been struck while at a scene. Last weekend, Brian Peek, a member of the Goldsboro Fire Company in York County, was tragically struck and killed while directing traffic at a crash site.
We hope that the injured victim makes a quick recovery.
Pedestrian Injury Rates in Mifflin County
In Mifflin County, pedestrian accidents have been on the rise, with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reporting a 15% increase in pedestrian injuries from 2022 to 2023. Alarmingly, 8% of these incidents occurred in rural areas such as Mifflin County. This surge in accidents underscores a pressing need for improved safety measures and heightened public awareness. The majority of these accidents happen in poorly lit areas and intersections lacking proper crosswalks, suggesting that better infrastructure could significantly reduce these injuries.
If you find yourself involved in a pedestrian accident, it is crucial to act swiftly. Seek medical attention immediately, even if you feel fine, as some injuries might not be immediately visible. Document the scene thoroughly by taking photos and gathering contact information from witnesses. Make sure to report the accident to local law enforcement and obtain a copy of the police report.
