Lower Saucon Twp, PA (April 7, 2025) – An injury car crash occurred early Saturday morning, April 5, along Interstate 78 eastbound in Lower Saucon Township. The crash, reported by the Pennsylvania State Police in Belfast, happened around 12:15 a.m. near mile marker 63.5, close to Route 309.
According to state police, a 2024 Toyota Corolla driven by a 51-year-old man from West Lawn, Berks County, veered from the left lane and struck the front bumper of a 2025 Freightliner tractor-trailer operated by a 51-year-old man from Shermans Dale, Perry County.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to lose control, overturn, and collide with both a concrete wall and a guardrail before coming to a stop. The Toyota also struck a concrete barrier and came to rest, blocking the eastbound travel lanes.
Emergency medical services responded promptly, transporting both drivers to nearby hospitals for treatment. The driver of the Toyota was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital-Anderson Campus in Bethlehem Twp, while the truck driver was taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill. Both men sustained injuries; however, the specific nature and severity of those injuries have not been released.
Firefighters were on scene to assist with vehicle extrication and to help secure the area, while Pennsylvania State Police launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. The crash shut down the interstate between Exit 60 at Rte 309 and Exit 67 at Rte 412 for several hours as crews worked to remove debris and restore safe travel conditions.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families as they recover from this incident.
