Lehigh Co., PA (March 31, 2025) – One person lost their life following a collision that occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lehigh County.
Authorities were dispatched to the northbound lanes of Interstate 476 near mile marker 67 on Sunday, March 30. Emergency dispatchers and the Lehigh County Coroner confirmed that the crash resulted in at least one fatality. The Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene alongside medical crews and local fire departments. Upon arrival, first responders worked to secure the area and assist those involved.
The accident led to the complete shutdown of the northbound side of the highway, causing heavy traffic and delays throughout the region. Motorists were diverted off the Turnpike as officials cleared the scene and began an investigation into what caused the crash. The identity of the person who died has not yet been publicly released, pending family notification.
Although the total number of vehicles involved has not been confirmed, damage to the vehicles and debris on the roadway suggest a severe impact. Investigators are working to determine whether speed, distraction, or another factor may have played a role. Additional information is expected as the investigation continues.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased individual.
Car Accidents in Pennsylvania
Car accidents in Pennsylvania claim hundreds of lives each year and injure thousands more. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were over 115,000 reportable crashes across the state in 2023 alone. These incidents resulted in more than 1,100 deaths and roughly 67,000 injuries. Many of these accidents occur on highways like I-476, where speeds are high and conditions can change quickly.
Understanding the common types of injuries caused by high-impact collisions can help shed light on what victims may face after an accident:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): In crashes involving high speeds, a sudden jolt or blow to the head can cause brain injuries ranging from mild concussions to long-term cognitive impairment. These injuries may not be immediately visible and often require imaging and monitoring in the days following the accident.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Even with safety restraints, the force of a collision can damage the spinal cord. This can result in numbness, limited mobility, or paralysis. Treatment and rehabilitation may last months or even years, depending on the severity.
- Broken Bones: It’s not uncommon for crash victims to suffer fractures. Arms, legs, ribs, and collarbones are especially vulnerable. Broken bones can lead to surgeries, physical therapy, and lost income during recovery.
- Internal Injuries: Blunt force trauma from airbags, seat belts, or striking the inside of the car can lead to internal bleeding or organ damage. These injuries are especially dangerous because they may not present symptoms immediately but can be life-threatening if untreated.
