Cumberland Co, PA – Fatal Crash on Rte 581 Near Exits 3 and 5

Cumberland Co, PA (April 21, 2025) – A construction worker was killed and another injured in a tragic multi-vehicle crash early Monday morning, April 21, on Route 581 in the borough of Camp Hill. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes between Exit 3 (Rte 11/Carlisle Pike) and Exit 5 (Rte 15/Gettysburg/Camp Hill), according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Authorities say a PennDOT construction vehicle was traveling in the closed right lane of a work zone, picking up cones, when a FedEx double tractor-trailer traveling in the left lane veered into the restricted area and slammed into the rear of the construction vehicle. The force of the impact caused a chain-reaction collision involving two additional vehicles, with debris from the wreck damaging a fourth.

Emergency medical services responded promptly, transporting both workers from the construction vehicle to a nearby hospital. One of the workers, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead upon arrival. The second worker sustained moderate injuries and is receiving treatment. The driver of the FedEx truck and the occupants of the other vehicles were not reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Fire crews were dispatched to assist with vehicle extrication and containment of a significant fuel spill. A heavy debris field and hazardous conditions prolonged the closure of all eastbound lanes of Rte 581 between I-81 and Exit 5. The entry ramp from Trindle Road was also closed during cleanup and investigation efforts. Lanes reopened around 12:30 p.m. after extensive roadway clearing and crash reconstruction work by Pennsylvania State Police.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of the worker who tragically lost their life in this crash. We extend our best wishes for a full and swift recovery to the surviving victim.

Fatal Work Zone Crashes in Cumberland County

Work zones present heightened risks for both workers and drivers, particularly in busy corridors like those found in Cumberland County. Narrow lanes, reduced speed limits, and frequent lane closures create hazardous conditions where even a moment of inattention can have fatal consequences. Construction workers are especially exposed, often performing duties just feet away from moving traffic.

When a fatal accident occurs in a work zone, the victim’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim. These claims can help recover damages for funeral expenses, loss of income, and emotional suffering caused by another party’s negligence. In cases where a driver ignores lane closures or enters restricted areas, legal action may serve both as a path to justice and as a deterrent to future tragedies.
