  • Montour Township, PA (August 20, 2024) – A fatal motorcycle crash occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Montour Township, Pennsylvania, resulting in the death of one individual. The collision, reported by the Montour Township Police Department, happened at approximately 1:56 p.m. on State Route 11 near Vreeland’s Harley Davidson. According to the Montour Township Police Department, 52-year-old Franklin Persing from Berwick was riding his motorcycle southbound on State Route 11 with his wife, 36-year-old Ruth Persing, as a passenger. The couple signaled to turn into the parking lot of Vreeland’s Harley Davidson when they were rear-ended by a car. The impact caused both Franklin and Ruth to be thrown from the motorcycle and onto the parking lot. The driver of the car, who was distracted by their ringing phone, did not notice the motorcycle in time to avoid the collision. The car's driver sustained minor injuries from the airbag deployment and was treated at the scene by emergency responders. Franklin Persing was transported to GMC Danville with serious injuries. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, Ruth Persing was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews, including firefighters, were involved in the extraction of the vehicles and the management of the accident scene. The Montour Township Police Department has confirmed that the investigation into the crash is ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and any potential factors contributing to the collision. Rising Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Montour Township: Addressing the Legal and Financial Implications Montour Township, Pennsylvania, has experienced a troubling rise in motorcycle accidents in recent years. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, motorcycle fatalities in the state surged by 12% from 2022 to 2023. In 2023 alone, there were 210 motorcycle-related deaths reported across Pennsylvania, reflecting a significant increase from the previous year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) underscores that motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to die in a crash per mile traveled compared to occupants of passenger cars. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and greater awareness to protect motorcyclists on the road. In the aftermath of such tragic events, families often face significant financial and emotional burdens. A wrongful death claim can provide essential compensation for these losses. Damages in such claims may include coverage for funeral and burial expenses, medical bills incurred prior to death, loss of income and financial support, and compensation for the pain and suffering experienced by the survivors. The specific damages that can be recovered vary depending on the case and jurisdiction. Typically, wrongful death claims are filed by the immediate family members of the deceased, such as spouses, children, or parents. In some cases, other dependents or individuals who suffered substantial losses due to the death may also be eligible to file. For those affected by the tragic motorcycle accidents in Montour Township, seeking legal advice can be crucial in navigating these complex issues and securing the compensation needed to address their losses.
