Pedestrian Accidents in Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PA – Pedestrian Killed After Being Hit on 63rd StPennsylvania continues to see a troubling number of pedestrian-related crashes each year. In 2023, nearly 4,000 pedestrian accidents occurred statewide, with over 180 resulting in fatalities. Many of these tragedies happen in urban areas, especially in Philadelphia, where foot traffic is heavy and fast-moving vehicles are common.

As heartbreaking events like this continue to occur, it’s important to understand several contributing factors behind pedestrian accidents:

  • Poor Visibility at Night: The majority of fatal pedestrian accidents take place after dark. Low lighting makes it difficult for drivers to see individuals crossing the road, especially when wearing dark clothing. Reflective gear and better street lighting can help, but visibility challenges remain a major risk.

  • Distracted Driving: Texting, GPS use, and other distractions lead to countless avoidable tragedies. Drivers who are not focused on the road may miss seeing a pedestrian until it’s too late. Even a few seconds of distraction can result in deadly consequences.

  • Jaywalking and Unsafe Crossings: While many pedestrian accidents occur due to driver error, some incidents stem from pedestrians crossing outside designated areas. When pedestrians cross between intersections or ignore traffic signals, it increases their risk of being struck.

  • High-Speed Corridors in Urban Areas: Some roads in city neighborhoods are designed for faster traffic flow, but they cut through pedestrian-heavy areas. When speed limits are too high for the area, crashes become more likely—and more deadly.
