Maxatawny Twp, PA (January 12, 2025) – A tragic semi-truck crash occurred on Friday, January 10, claiming the life of a Reading man in eastern Berks County. The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. on US Route 222 (Kutztown Rd), near the 15380 block of the road, west of Kutztown Borough.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Tulio Espinoza Canales, 36, of Reading, was traveling northbound on U.S. 222 in a 1999 Honda CRV. Espinoza Canales collided with a tractor-trailer heading southbound. The force of the crash split the Honda CRV in half, and Espinoza Canales was ejected from the car.
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Espinoza Canales dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a man from Staten Island, was not injured in the crash. Authorities, including fire crews, assisted in extracting the wreckage and clearing the scene. Traffic was temporarily diverted as the crash site was processed and cleaned up.
The investigation is ongoing. The Pennsylvania State Police continue to urge drivers to exercise caution when passing other vehicles and to be mindful of road conditions.
